Solar Eclipse Permission Slip

On August 21, 2017, for the first time since 1918, a solar eclipse will be visible on a path across the United States. From our school, we will experience a partial eclipse, and we are planning the following learning experience for our students.

To insure a safe learning experience, select Hesby teachers will escort small groups of students with signed permission slips outside to view the ECLIPSE in a controlled and safe environment.

NASA approved solar filters will be used for the viewing.

As always, student safety is our top priority. Looking directly at the sun is unsafe and can cause permanent eye damage or other unknown effects. The only way to safely look at the sun uneclipsed or partially eclipsed is through special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse eyewear.” According to NASA, homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even those with very dark lenses, are not safe for looking at the sun.

Although there is no way to guarantee student safety during such a rare event, we will take precautionary measures to ensure that students are aware of the risks of looking directly at the sun.

At no time should students or other participants remove their eclipse eyewear and look directly at the sun. Please speak with your child about the importance of keeping their eclipse eyewear on during this event. For more information, visit

If you want your child to participate in the outdoor viewing activity planned for August 21, please review, sign and return this form to your child’s teacher. If you do not wish for your child to be outside during in the event or if you do not return this form, alternative activities will be held inside during this period.

By signing this permission slip, you, as the parent or guardian of a minor child, are acknowledging that you are aware of the risks associated with this event, that you freely assume those risks, and that you waive the right to pursue any and all claims against the Los Angeles Unified School District, its agents, employees, Board of Education members, insurers and others acting on the District’s behalf.

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year.

Welcome to new and returning Hesby families.

With the support of our generous parents, we have made Hesby one of the best schools in LAUSD.  Let's keep this going.  You can make your H.O.P.E. donation at our tables that will be set up the first week of school.  $500 per student is the requested amount.  Cash, check payable to Hesby Involved Parents, and most major credit cards accepted.

On our website, you can also use the "donate" button under the thermometer to pay via PayPal.  As alway, your $500 donation gets you the latest car magnet and Hesby t-shirt to show you supported our school.

We are changing up our fundraisers this year to keep it fun and exciting for everyone.  Our fall fundraiser will be World's Finest Chocolates $1 bars.  If every student sells JUST ONE BOX, we could make $15,000 on just this alone.

In the spring, we will bring back the Mixed Bags fundraiser just in time for Mother's Day.

The Hesby Fun Run will be in November.  Hesby, you have made this Fun Run so successful.  Let's make this the best one ever.

Save the date, March 3rd, for the Hesby Havana Nights annual gala at the new Everly Hotel in Hollywood.  The online auction will be Feb 12-23.  Stay tuned for more details.

Our online calendar will be the place to find out what is coming up at school, including early dismissal days and no school days.  All events will be kept as up to date as possible.  As a public school, we are often required to make changes in the calendar, please refer back to it often.

Reading for pleasure unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are. Here’s what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading:

  • Set the example. Let children see you read.
  • Have a collection of books in your home. Update this collection routinely to keep up with changing tastes and reading skills.

  • Support our school’s Book Fair. Allow your children to choose their own books to read.

Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings the books kids want to read right into our school. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.

Book Fair dates: Opening Friday evening, August 25 and continuing through Thursday, August 31

Special activities: Join us on Friday Evening during the Back to School BBQ where we will be raffling off prizes!!

We look forward to seeing you and your family at our Book Fair! Remember, all purchases benefit our school.
